Zaalberg, Pottenbakkerij

Family company: 1918-1937 H. Zaalberg Sr., 1937-1962, M.H. Zaalberg, 1962 H. Zaalberg Jr. First named Pottery Factory/Pottenbakkerij De Rijn, Mark/backstamp Zaalberg Holland, since 1942 Zaalberg only uses markstamps on their ceramics.

Zaalberg produced tile-sceneries, figures/sculptures, unica/single pieces and very fairly simple handcrafted ceramic tea/dinner/mocha/coffee sets in grey/white, brown, cornflower blue, light blue, mat black, etc. Only glaze decoration (with sometimes ribbon decoration). With a.o. dolomites clay, semolina (sparkle white) glaze and stoneware with rim glaze. Designed with different ear/handles,  like Rondom (= round about), Knop (= knob), Klei (= clay) and Vuur (= fire), Hollebol, but also Kip op nest (= chicken on nest and in 1992 dinner set Kommee (= come with me). Pottery unica/singlepieces by Gijp Zaalberg between 1971-1974 inspired at science fiction,  growth models & use of engobes and glazes.

The unika/single pieces of Herman Jr. are a.o. white glazed subtle shaped gear into another plates and bowls. Meindert’s unica are simple subtle glazed (pure harmonie) models, look like they are inspired by oriental ceramics. Sales through exhibitions, decorative art and furniture stores (no advertising, the art should speak for itself & reviews), mostly direct sales from show-room and special assignments, since 1992.
