Distel, Plateelbakkerij De
In the beginning Plateelbakkerij de Distel, this pottery factory made colourfull decorative art pottery in the Rozenburg style, Decorative tiles for on the wall (copies of paintings and images), advertising- & commemorative tile sceneries, Celtic influences. De Distel took over pottery factory Lotus of Nienhuis in 1901, Nienhuis’ mat glaze ceramics at an ivory background with changing geometrical ornament-decorations, became the speciality of Distel, clients all over the world! Pottery factory de Amstelhoek became part of De Distel in 1910. Wide assortment, like decorative art vases, cache pots, jar/bottle (distillery W. Fockink), clogs/wooden shoes, plates with motto's, ashtray's, tiles/tile-sceneries, etc. Honoured many times because of the original shapes, elegant decorations and the variety of ceramic items. 40 pottery-painters in employment. Jugendstil tile-sceneries with embossed decorations, consisting of 35 tiles in tube lining tiles-technics, also some vases known with this embossed decor.
Weather durable carduustiles: (carduus = thistle) simple square and brown, more embossed images of small dragon-flies, twisted geometrical decorations and coloured dots, also oriental yin-yang pattern (Motifs scratched/beaten partly as engobe lines or squares with slip application, green and ochre yellow), drip technics. Carduus sceneries have a (painting) rim of tiles. In 1925 Koninklijke Goedewaagen bought De Distel because of stagnation after World War I, production proceded for some while in a seperate part of the factory.
