Fris, NV, Keramische Industrie
Pottery factory (Studio) Fris produced household kitchenware pottery and luxury use ceramics, like vases, petit four-, pastry- en peanut sets, distinguished itself by good shapes and fresh colours with a shaded glaze, high aesthetical standards. Emphasis on the highest using value, like stacking needs less cupboard room. Decoration was 'useless, unpractical and diverts the attention’. Mark/backstamp: Fris Edam or Studio Fris Made in Holland.
Imitated by other kitchenware pottery factories: Sphinx, Regina, etc. Designer Willem Hendrik de Vries wished only to produce for a very small group of buyers. Bought Art Pottery factory NV Kunstaardewerkfabriek De Volharding, in Gouda in 1943. Moved to Edam, former canteen of the Fokker Airplane factories, changed name in NV Keramische Industrie Fris.
Between 1947 and 1951 Fris doubled the ceramics production, more demand than supply. Some producers received the hallmark/stamp of Stichting Goed Wonen. In the sixties, nobody bought complete pottery dinner sets anymore and there was the rising star of porcelain. At the end of the fifties dinner set Jubilant was comparable with porcelain, much stronger ceramics.
